McLean Swim and Tennis
MSTA is a community-based, non-profit recreational and social organization serving local Northern Virginia neighborhoods.  First opened in the 1950's, this poolhouse had shown it's age over the years not through neglect but through overuse.  Many areas of the facility were worn out simply due to the popularity of this neighborhood pool.  In response, the McLean Swim and Tennis Board of Directors selected BZ Architects to renovate the poolhouse interiors.

Besides providing a welcoming and comfortable environment to the user, BZ Architects was also tasked with bringing the facility up to present-day building and accessibility codes.  In addition, our design incorporated many client-requested amenities - including a handicap-accessible family changing room and a larger, more inviting entry and staff area  - that would add value to the McLean Swim and Tennis facility and increase the potential client base.

Finishes for McLean Swim and Tennis were selected to meet a challenging criteria.  It was decided at an early stage that the majority of materials selected had to withstand the kind of vigorous cleaning that would typically be provided in this type of facility, given the youthfulness of the facilities' employees.  To that end, while laminates were deemed acceptable on the vertical surfaces of the reception area, composite quartz surfaces were used on all writing surfaces and ground face concrete block, translucent glass block and ceramic mosaic tile were used at all new walls and floors.

BZ Architects provided architectural, interior design and construction administration services for this project.  This project was constructed by others.

Above, the reception area is accented by strips of MSTA-blue tile and complementary maple wood laminate.   Glass block is used to open the facility up visually while screening the user from direct view.
