Focal Point
The focus of most homes is the kitchen and this Boston-area duplex is no exception.  With a restricted floor plan, all work was limited to the 1st floor, where the mostly-enclosed kitchen was seen to be remote from the dining and living areas.  Our response was to blend the spaces together so that the entire 1st floor could be viewed as one open space, creating a larger whole.

The darker toned pantries provide dry storage while helping to define the dining area,  while the 2-toned wood floor establishes a visual link with the kitchen.  A large island and bar completes the design and helps shield the kitchen from the living area.  What once had been constrained rooms becomes a group of warm, inviting spaces where the Owner and guest alike can converse freely.
