Having grown accustomed to their house over many years, this client determined that they would transform their existing rambler on a heavily wooded site into an open, light-filled and accessible home that would accommodate their eventual retirement.  

The existing, north-facing foyer had poor natural light and felt confining.  To compensate, the foyer's low ceiling was removed and a double-height entry pavilion addition installed in place.  The vaulted ceiling extends out beyond the face of the foyer addition and provides the main entry with a comfortable covered porch.  Provided with floor-to-ceiling windows on three sides, the new foyer presents a graceful welcome to the visitor.  

Located on the house's main floor, the original master bedroom suite could not accommodate the client's requirement of increased size and full accessibility.  The result is a new, 2000 SF, three-level addition that includes an en suite master bedroom on the first floor, a lower level game room with kitchenette and a basement level mechanical room.  A residential elevator links the three levels together  - allowing complete mobility throughout, and an extensive series of screened porches and open decks unites the various rooms and spaces.

With all rooms having 11 foot high ceilings the overall character of the house is one of comfort and ease achieved not through the addition of raw square footage but through design, detail and selection of materials.
